Hotfoot it to The Lowry Hotel for a very special midweek meal

BEST foot forward as Wellington Wednesday at The River Restaurant at The Lowry Hotel is one rich idea we think is going to be a sellout. Made for those chillier evenings when you fancy a bit of comfort food that’s classy as well as classic, the traditional pastry-encased meat dish has been given the Dave Ashton makeover.

The new executive head chef has recently revealed details of the celebrational menu he’s created for the chic and sophisticated new surroundings of The River Restaurant at the five-star Lowry Hotel, describing his dishes as old favourites updated with a modern twist. And one of his personal favourites is a classic Beef Wellington, which is brought to the table and showcased by the chef before being sliced and shared out for two to tuck into. From November, Dave and the team are dishing up a different Wellington every Wednesday, so you get to try four versions if you plan things right.

Starting on 6 November (and back on 4 December and 8 January), Wellington Wednesday dishes up Duck Breast rolled in super-flaky puff pastry with Confit Leg Duxelle and Savoy Cabbage, served with Duck Fat Chips. The second Wellington Wednesday (and so on) sees Pork Fillet Wellington with Sage and Apple Stuffing, Truffled Cauliflower Cheese and Pommery Grain Mustard Mash, then it’s the turn of Venison Wellington with 24-hour Braised Shoulder Farce, Caramelised Red Cabbage, and Juniper and Orange Sauce. The final of the four versions is Chicken Wellington with Wild Mushroom and Truffle Duxelle, Glazed Chicken Wings and Bacon Dauphinoise, coming up on 27 November, 1 January (Christmas Day is leapfrogged) and 29 January.

This is an excellent chance to try out the dynamic new menu at The River Restaurant, which has only just reopened following a refit, and is gearing up to be one of the best places to eat in Manchester, already honoured with two AA rosettes for its seasonal dishes all created and prepared on site.
