Ancoats favourite to expand onto Peter Street following Mission Mars investment

The owners of Ancoats' award-winning neighbourhood pizza parlour, Rudy’s, have confirmed with Confidential plans to open their second city centre branch.

The new restaurant will occupy a ground floor space in Petersfield House on Peter Street, in the former Army Careers centre between Albert’s Schloss and Brewdog.

The expansion follows a recent investment by bar group Mission Mars – operators of Trof, Gorilla and the wildly successful Schloss – after they purchased a stake in Rudy’s back in April.

Confidential understands that Mission Mars – formed when Revolution bar founders Roy Ellis and Neil Macleod acquired a 50% stake in Manchester’s Trof Group in 2015 – now intend to grow the Rudy’s brand across the North West.

Rudy’s opened on Ancoats’ newly-styled Cutting Room Square in 2015, when street food couple and pizza obsessives, Jim Morgan and Kate Wilson, were offered an affordable space by the Home and Communities Agency (HCA) – which had teamed up with the council to regenerate the neighbourhood via the 'Manchester Place' initiative.

The restaurant - which specialises in Neapolitan pizzas cooked in a wood burning stove - soon had queues snaking out the door, and became one of only two Manchester pizzerias to make it into Where To Eat Pizza, a guide to the best 1,700 pizza parlours across the globe (the other was Altrincham's Honest Crust - where Morgan learnt the ropes).

The popularity of Rudy's has since kickstarted a food and drink led renaissance in Ancoats, with multiple new bars and restaurants opening in the area, including Seven Bro7hers, Squid Ink and Second City Bar. Altrincham's award-winning pasta masters, Sugo, are the latest to announce a move into the area.

Meanwhile, the equally effervescent Peter Street continues its own food and drink led revival, with Rudy's just one of several new openings planned for the street, including Brew Haus, Tup Tup Palace and Dirty Martini.
