The second in a series of galleries taking an alternative look at some of Manchester's best-looking venues
Descend the steel staircase from Cathedral Street into Alston Bar & Beef and you'll find a subterranean bar and restaurant where they've paid as much attention to their design as to the provenance of their beef.
Architects and designers Jestico and Whiles created this space beneath the Corn Exchange in 2017, drawing on elements of Manchester culture (those bees, again) and on aspects of the original Alston Bar & Beef in Glasgow.
Local street artist Tank Petrol was commissioned to create the huge, gaze-holding mural in the dining space. Elsewhere sleek, industrial elements deliver a dramatic backdrop, while playful neon and botanical images stop it all from getting too intense. The kind of place Batman might go for a steak on one of his chill days.
