YOU ruthlessly despatched 22 of the finest burger joints in the city -  and in the end we were left with a fight that went to the Death.

Three weeks ago we picked 24 of the hottest places in Liverpool where you could eat a burger. National grill chains, bbq indies, beer bars and dedicated restaurants.

Then we asked you, the public, to choose your favourite - in a daily knockout on twitter.

You duly did (thanks y'all). Thousands of votes were cast in an elimination countdown that provoked hot debate and shows of loyalty.

There were shocks and surprises as, each day, the big guns went down: Almost Famous, Wall Of Fame, Meat Factory, Reds True Barbecue, Rack & Dollar and more.

After thousands of votes just two were left in the ring. In the light and holy corner: Maryland Street’s Free State Kitchen, a former convent where statues of angels watch as you eat.

In the dark and unholy corner:  near neighbour Death Row Diner, a spine-chilling basement where serial killers stare down at your ribs.

After 48 hours of solid Twitter voting this week, the gruesome grill on Hope Street slaughtered the opposition to claim an overwhelming two-to-one victory.

Death Row Diner, where lethal injections are the name of the game, is - according to YOU - the best place in Liverpool for a burger.

DRD, owned by serial restaurateur Rob Gutmann, along with Yardbird and Motel, was last night jubilant.

"We're made up to win Liverpool Confidential’s Burger-Off," said DRD’s head burger meister.

"Our masterpieces are works of love and it's wonderful that the great Liverpool public appreciates our dedication to the burger cause.”

Take a bow, Death Row Diner, and commisserations to the wonderful FSK.

Meat, ladies and gentleman, is indeed, murder.
