Bold Street is about to get Ugly

With rules that include “no touching the girls even if it’s your wife or girlfriend” and a warning that you may lose items of clothing, you might be mistaken for thinking this is a story about the pub in the House of Commons.

But no, this is less about Downing Street and more about downing it in one.

“Liverpool is about to get Ugly,” it says here, with the grand opening of Coyote Ugly Saloon next month.

For all you non-Earthlings, this is “the most famous bar on the planet”, named and themed after the eponymous 2000 movie, starring Tyra Banks and John Goodman.

Remember when this was a Waterstones?

Situated on the corner of Bold Street and Concert Street, in what was once the Halle des Modes, one of the city’s most beautiful music halls, Coyote Ugly Saloon will be known for female bartenders called “Coyotes” dancing on the bar and “a wild atmosphere”.

If you ask for water you might get it in your face and, naturally, a rodeo bull will be fitted as standard.

"Easily offended?" in their words. Or perhaps not so. Either way you may have already concluded that this is not for you.

Indeed it says so in the rules and warnings, which are...

1. You may get wet
2. You may lose items of clothing
3. No men on the bar
4. No touching the girls on the bar, even if it’s your wife or girlfriend
5. If you pick a bad song on the jukebox, it may be skipped
6. If you’re easily offended, this bar isn’t for you
7. Be nice and have fun
8. Drink responsibly
9. We may be filming
10. Ladies no stilettos, flip flops or bare feet on the bar

Founded in 1993 in New York City’s East Village, Coyote Ugly Saloon boasts loud music, hard liquor and women branded with a canine name.

Is that where you come in, ladies of 2017?

Auditions are being held for "Kick-ass Coyote Bartenders" to do the choreographed dancing, the tending and the fending off. If you can do all that and sing, even better, in their book.

“But don’t let that put you off from applying,” they say, as personality is the main quality they are looking for. To illustrate, here is October's Coyote of the Month, Brittany.

Personality is the most important asset of a Coyote

The CEO and founder of Coyote Ugly Saloons, Liliana Lovell, will be attending the auditions on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th November. Here's the link.

Far from being sexist, she says, it's all about empowering women. After all, she goes on to explain, they are allowed to dance on the bar and men aren't.

"This is all about feeling comfortable with yourself and having the confidence to get up there and dance," Lovell told reporters last year.  "They feel good about themselves and they make others feel good. That's female empowerment."

Liverpool is the first English location for Coyote Ugly Saloon - we’ve got an “overwhelming” public vote to thank for that - but it’s nothing new for the party animals of Cardiff who have had the pleasure since December. The brand is also big in Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, the US, Germany and, of course, Japan.

As for the food, its all about the American BBQ so how about an Ugly Platter: six meats and nine sides served in a giant bucket?

"Forget plates, boards and fancy dining," they say.

Yup. That and everything else you were ever told.
