EVER spent £60 on a facial only to feel like you could have got the same results from a facepack and an hour relaxing in the bath? I have –  it's why it's been five years since I last had a facial, and why nowadays I'd rather spend my money on beauty treatments that give you results you can actually see.

My skin looked more radiant and my wrinkles looked softened.

But here I am, almost 37, and desperately needing to ward off those wrinkles and hide my lifestyle of overindulgence and love of Marlboro Lights. I'd been considering Botox to rid me of my frown wrinkle but then I heard about Galvanic Spa Facials, which use a galvanic spa tool to rub anti-aging gels deep into your skin. These treatments have been used in spas and salons for nearly 50 years with impressive results, and have just been launched at Trevor Sorbie Manchester. I made an appointment with Galvanic Spa specialist Katy Willis and hoped it would live it up to the hype.

Img_0273BeforeBefore she got started, Katy quizzed me on my skin and how it reacts in different circumstances: hormonal breakouts, changing weather and so on, before explaining how the galvanic spa device works.

This small, handheld machine has two metallic heads; a larger one for the main area of the face and a smaller one for the t-zone areas. Katy explained that this wouldn't be the usual relaxing facial but a deep, penetrating, proactive treatment.

I lay back and let Katy go to work on my skin. The facial began with a light face wash, which was perfect for me as cream cleansers never leave my skin feeling fully clean. Katy felt the same about them, to my surprise, as I thought beauty therapists always frowned upon face wash.

Then it was time for the exfoliation. When I think of exfoliators, I think of harsh, grainy products. Not here; Katy layered a chalky cream onto my face and let it dry a little before rubbing the cream with her fingers, creating friction. I could actually feel it exfoliating my skin.

Now I was ready for the galvanic treatment itself. Katy applied the ageLOC gel to my skin and then moved the machine over my face with firm movements, explaining that the painless electric currents help the gel penetrate deep into my skin whilst drawing out the impurities.

She did this for about 20 minutes before applying a face mask which was left for about 15 minutes while I relaxed. Finally she layered my skin with a nightcream and told me to avoid make-up and washing my face until the morning.

She then showed me the results. I don't want to sound like a L’Oreal advert but I could immediately could see a difference. My skin looked more radiant and my wrinkles looked softened.

A no make-up selfie doesn’t do it justice (and no one wants to see me without make-up). But I think you can see how my skin looks brighter and fresher from the after picture. And a day later, when I had applied my usual warpaint for a night out, I noticed the difference even more. If you want to give your skin a visible boost, and try a facial that isn't just about cleansing and relaxing but actually getting results, this is for you.
